Make your own birdbath

There’s no need to go out and buy an expansive bird bath - you can make your own using an upturned dustbin lid, some bricks and some gravel.

Water is one of the most important things you can add to your garden to attract the birds. All birds need water for two reasons: drinking and preening. In the winter, birds need water to help wash down their food as their diets are usually drier than in the summer when juicy insects are available. They also need water to keep their feathers in good condition which helps them with body insulation during the cold winter nights.

There’s no need to go out and buy an expansive bird bath - you can make your own using an upturned dustbin lid, some bricks and some gravel.

How to make your bird bath

  1. 1. Lay out four bricks on your lawn. If cats visit your garden, make sure there is nowhere for them to hide within pouncing distance.
  2. 2. Put an upturned, galvanised dustbin lid on top of the bricks and make sure it’s stable.
  3. 3. Feel inside the lid. If it’s too smooth, birds may slip in the water. If that’s the case, add some gravel or pebbles to give them better grip.
  4. 4. Fill the lid with water and sit back and watch your feathered friends take a dip! In frosty weather, never use ice or de-icer. Simply add warm (not hot) water or gently knock out the ice and replace with fresh water.
  5. 5. Keep your bird bath clean. Water features will attract the most birds when the water is clean and fresh.
