This product is not used in NHS podiatry practise as far as I am aware. I also have not had experience of a patient using this product before. I reviewed the literature that came with the product which is quite comprehensive. It advises patients to only use the product on a GPs agreement. With this I would agree. People can develop hallux valgus (HAV) for lots of different reasons, genetic factors or inflammatory arthropathies and sometimes biomechanical. I can see merits in the product but I feel it would have to be used following a clinical assessment to check the suitability of the HAV type and even then it would need professional monitoring afterwards to ensure it was being therapeutic. If used incorrectly it could quite easily cause problems, for example in the literature it mentions the use of the splint after a bunion operation, and this should only be done with the permission of the surgeon who carried out the procedure. The literature also seems to indicate that the splint is suitable to wear when doing sports. With this I strongly disagree. So in summary I feel lots of cautions about this product. I feel it should only be used under the direction of a health care professional.
