Glossary of Terms

Acrylic

Acrylic is a synthetic polymer based fabric that we use for a number of our slipper styles. Acrylic is lightweight, soft, and warm, with a wool-like feel. It is hard wearing, washes well, and retains its shape.

Angora Wool

Angora wool comes from the dawny coat of the Angora rabbit. It is soft, silky, light in weight and has exceptional insulating properties.

Bellows Tongue

Bellows Tongue is the name given to the tongue of a shoe when it is joined to the uppers at the sides as well as the bottom. This allows the shoe to be opened wide and provide adjustment over the instep.

Botany Wool

This fine gauge Australian Wool is named after Botany Bay, from where English tradesman used to ship wool back to England.

Caretex

Caretex is the name given to a membrane inserted into a fabric which keeps moisture out yet lets perspiration through so your feet are kept fresh and dry.

Cotton

Cotton is a natural fibre derived from the cotton plant. It is well known for being soft, durable and breathable.

Diabetic Friendly

Our products that feature the diabetic friendly logo have been recognised as being suitable for use by individuals who have diabetes. However, we are not medical suppliers and so you need to make your own judgement about suitability for your individual needs.

When it comes to footwear socks and hosiery we always suggest that you run your fingers inside any item before wear, checking for anything that may harm. If in doubt we always recommend that you contact your own health advisor.

Elastane

Elastane is a synthetic fibre known for its exceptional elasticity. It is also known as spandex and more recognisable under the trade name of Lycra®. We use Elastane in some of our footwear as its elasticity allows the uppers of the shoe to change according to the shape and size of your feet but then return to its original form afterwards.

To clean the Elastane part of your shoes, simply let any mud or dirt dry before brushing with a small dry brush.

Everyday Hosiery

This special Extra Roomy range, manufactured exclusively for Cosyfeet in the UK, offers a more generous fit for those who require a little extra room but at an everyday price.

Flexible Polyurethane Soles

Our Flexible Polyurethane Soles are highly durable making them more suited to active individuals and those who tend to be hard on their footwear. Many products found on the High Street will be produced with this form of soling.

The weight difference when compared with our super-light soles might be noticeable in the hand, but lesser so on the foot for the majority of wearers.

Polyurethane does not lend itself to modification in the same way that EVA does but footwear featuring Polyurethane soles can be adapted by a good cobbler.

The tread on this type of sole unit generally offers superior grip when compared with the super-light EVA soles.

Light Support Hosiery

Our Light Support hosiery features Leg-Care® technology to help improve circulation and reduce leg fatigue. The support is provided by Lycra® and is recognised as factor 6 on support hosiery compression ratings.

Machine Washable

This footwear is machine washable at up to 40º C. Simply place in your washing machine with similar coloured items, ensuring that the Velcro is fastened and wash on a normal setting.

It is important that you allow the footwear to dry naturally – it can be line dried or in an airing cupboard but should not be placed near to heat sources such as radiators or open fires. Do not tumble dry.

Microfibre

Microfibre is a very fine blend of polyester and polyamide fibres knitted together. It is exceptionally soft and holds its shape well. We do not recommend our products made from Microfibre to be machine washed, instead we suggest you allow mud to dry and remove with a stiff brush or sponge clean and allow to dry naturally.

When we say ‘no quibble’ we really mean it. If you are not 100% satisfied with any product, for any reason, at any time, you can return it for an immediate exchange or refund of the cost of the product.

Nubuck

Nubuck is the term used to describe cowhide leather which has been buffed to remove the shiny outer layer making it softer and more pliable to the touch. It is similar to suede but its texture is smoother.

Patent

Patent Leather is leather which has been given a high gloss, shiny finish.

Petite

Our petite length products are specially designed for individuals who are 160cm (5’3”) or under in height.

Polyamide

Polyamide is a synthetic fibre which is commonly combined with other fibres and used in our sock range. Polyamide enhances durability and stretch and ensures that the socks are easy to wash, dry quickly and retain their shape.

Softhold® Hosiery

Designed with total leg comfort in mind, the Softhold® range is exclusively manufactured for Cosyfeet in the UK and offers the best selection of comfort hosiery available anywhere. Ankle-highs, Knee-highs and Hold-ups feature our innovative Softhold® top which gently keeps hosiery in place without restricting circulation or leaving unsightly marks. All items are available in Standard and our Extra Roomy fitting, should a little more room be required.

Softhold® Socks

Softhold® socks have been specially designed by Cosyfeet to offer all round comfort and fit. The Softhold® top holds the socks gently in place without putting pressure on the calves, preventing pinching and squeezing and helping to maintain good circulation. This is especially important for those who may suffer with a medical condition.

They feature Elastane that allows the sock to stretch and mould to the shape of the foot, maximising comfort and improving the fit, this is particularly useful for awkward shaped feet and those that change shape during the day.

Available in Cotton-rich, Wool-rich and Thermal varieties, in sizes small to extra large and in Standard and our more generous Extra Roomy fitting, there is a Softhold® sock for every foot.

Softop™

The patented Softop™ top features three relaxation panels which are designed to contact vertically to hold the socks up gently without putting pressure on the calves, preventing pinching and squeezing and helping to maintain good circulation. This is especially important for those who may suffer from a medical condition.

Super-light Soles

Our Super-light soles are made from a chemical compound with rubbery properties called Ethylene Vinyl Acetate (EVA). They are exceptionally lightweight but not the most durable, making them less suitable for those who are reasonably active or happen to be hard on their footwear.

Super-light soles feel and appear rigid when handled but this is less noticeable when on the foot.

Used on our womens and mens sandals, their exceptional lightness is their greatest attribute. They are also easily modified making them ideal for individuals who require their footwear to be adapted.

The tread on this type of sole unit is less defined which can be of benefit to those who have a tendency to shuffle their feet.

Trilobal

A number of our slipper and bootee styles are made from a fabric called Trilobal. Trilobal is a type of polyester and is an ideal fabric for making soft, strong and warm slippers. It also washes well.

TPR Rubber Soles

The majority of our slipper and fabric shoes feature a sole unit made from thermo-plastic rubber (TPR). It is slightly heavier than polyurethane and not so durable but is very flexible and ideal for the type of footwear we use it on. It also withstands machine washing.

We do not recommend this type of sole to individuals who require modifications to their footwear.

Velcro®

Velcro® is a registered trade mark. We use genuine Velcro® wherever possible but occasionally it may be necessary to substitute an alternative touch fastening hook and loop closure. Velcro® fastening footwear is ideal for individuals who may have difficulty tying laces.

Warm Ribbed

Stylish comfort hosiery that keeps out the cold. Containing Supplex® (a registered trademark of the INVISTA brand), it has a cotton-like soft feel but is faster drying and with the help of Lycra® provides an exceptional fit.
