Silver Line – the helpline for older people

27 Feb 2015 09:17:47

The brainchild of Ester Rantzen, the Silver Line offers friendship, information and advice to older people.

The Silver Line

In August 2011, Esther Rantzen wrote an article about the loneliness she has experienced since being bereaved and living alone. She was overwhelmed by the huge response from older people who shared her experience.

In November 2011 she was invited to make a speech at a conference where she came up with the idea of creating a helpline to support vulnerable older people and break through the stigma of loneliness and isolation.

A pilot was launched in November 2012 funded by an initial grant from the Department of Health and Comic Relief. The Silver Line was then awarded a £5 million grant from the Big Lottery Fund in September 2013 and it launched just before Christmas 2013.

The Silver Line Helpline provides three functions to support older people:

  • A service to link them into the many, varied services that exist around the country
  • a befriending service to combat loneliness
  • a means of empowering those who may be suffering abuse and neglect and if appropriate to transfer them to specialist services to protect them from harm.

Silver Line

Since The Silver Line started operating it has received a staggering 35,000 calls. There are now 12,000 older people receiving regular weekly calls from their volunteer Silver Line friends. They have also started group chats called Silver Circles which are proving to be very popular and they are embarking on a new initiative called Silver Letters for people who prefer to communicate by post.

Chilly feet can be bad for your health!

19 Feb 2015 10:34:10

Having cold feet increases the risk of catching colds and flu according to a leading expert.

Warm socks & slippers may ward off colds & flu!

New research shows that wearing warm socks and slippers could help ward off colds and flu, as having cold feet increases the risk of catching viruses.

Dr Ron Eccles, director of Cardiff University's Common Cold Centre, has been studying the issue for more than 25 years. He says that many people carry the bugs which cause colds and flu in their nose already, without it causing symptoms that make them ill. But if the temperature of their feet drops, it causes a change in the whole body which leads to their nose becoming cold. This increases the likelihood of a full-blown cold developing.

‘Chilling the feet causes the blood vessels in the nose to constrict,' he explains. ‘It’s a protective reflex action which slows down the loss of heat from the body, to try to keep you warm. Your skin goes white, the inside of your nose and throat goes white and blood flow to the nose is reduced.

‘The white cells that fight infection are found in the blood, so then there are fewer white cells to fight the virus. Being cold also slows down the movement of the cilia - hairs in the nose that filter dirt and germs - allowing the virus to get into the body’, he added.

Walking around the house with bare feet and the heating off could also increase the risk of catching a cold.

‘If you can’t afford to catch a cold - for example if you’ve got an illness like bronchitis - you should keep your nose warm in winter, wear warm shoes and don’t let your feet get wet,’ Dr Eccles said.

Raynaud's Awareness Month

11 Feb 2015 15:33:22

February is Raynaud’s Awareness Month. Organised by the Raynaud's and Scleroderma Association, it aims to raise awareness of this common condition.

What is Raynaud’s?

Raynaud's is a condition in which blood is prevented from reaching the extremities of the body on exposure to the cold or any slight change in temperature. A small number of people who have Raynaud's also develop scleroderma, a disease which affects the connective tissue.

Raynauds

Scleroderma means hard skin but the hardness is not limited to the skin - the internal organs and their blood supply may become damaged. Scleroderma can be devastating not only for the person who has the condition but also for the families concerned.

Raynaud’s Awareness Month

Raynaud’s Awareness Month takes place every February as statistically it’s the coldest month of the year. Organised by the Raynaud's and Scleroderma Association, the month aims to raise awareness of these disorders and offer help and advice to sufferers and their families.

This year, the RSA is asking you to "LOVEyourGLOVES!" They want people to help them raise awareness and vital funds for research by tweeting #loveyourgloves, displaying a poster or organising a fundraising event.

LOVEyourGLOVES

For more information, contact the RSA on 01270 872776 or info@raynauds.org.uk. If you’d like to knit some gloves for Raynaud's Awareness Month, you can find some free patterns at https://knitmeasong.blogspot.co.uk/2009/07/glovelies-free-pattern.html. Please email us a photo of your finished gloves. We’d love to see them!
