    Walk your way to health!

    24 Apr 2013 09:22:19

According to recent research, walking is as good for you as running. You just need to do it for longer to get the same benefits.

Walking is as good for you as running!

The London Marathon, which took place at the weekend, was an amazing display of fitness and stamina particularly from the elite runners who finished before most people were even half-way round!

Running is often cited as a great way to stay fit and healthy as it’s good at reducing blood pressure and cholesterol. However, according to recent research, we don’t all need to be runners to be healthy.

Researchers have found that walking is just as good as running when it comes to reducing the risk of high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes. A study by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California found that the total energy used in exercise was more important than the intensity. That’s great news for those of us who don’t fancy taking up running!

In the first study of its kind, researchers found that walking briskly can lower the risk of high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes – all problems that can lead to heart disease – as much as running does.

    Runners

It was once thought that running was superior because runners travel further. But the benefits of both types of regular exercise were compared among 48,000 adults and found to be almost the same - as long as the energy used is similar, then the health boost is similar. The report estimates that a person would need to walk 4.3 miles at a brisk pace to have the same amount of exercise as running 3 miles.

Doireann Maddock, of the British Heart Foundation, said the findings show ‘that any brisk physical activity, not just those long, exhausting runs, can be great news for your heart health.

Whether it’s walking, jogging or running, staying active will help control your weight, reduce blood pressure and cholesterol, and improve your mental health.’

Give your feet a spring makeover!

    10 Apr 2013 10:23:36

If your feet have spent the winter cocooned in woolly socks or tights you might want to give them some attention before revealing them to the world again!

    Get your feet sandal ready!

We often ignore our feet during the winter months so they might not be looking their best at the moment. If that’s the case, don’t worry because we’ve got some simple tips to ensure they’re sandal-ready when the warmer weather finally arrives.

    1. 1. Start by washing your feet every day in warm soapy water. Anti-bacterial soap will help keep your feet smelling sweet as it combats the bacteria which causes foot odour.
    2. 2. If you have hard skin on your feet, very gently remove it with a pumice stone, but only do this once a week to avoid taking off too many layers of skin. If the skin is very hard or painful, we recommend you make an appointment to see a podiatrist.
    3. 3. When your feet are completely dry, apply a moisturising cream but avoid going between the toes as too much moisture can encourages athlete's foot.
    4. 4. If you’re cutting your toe nails, avoid cutting them too short and don’t cut down the corners as this can lead to in growing nails.
    5. 5. If you wear nail polish, to get it looking perfect, place the paintbrush in front of the cuticle then push back towards it until you almost touch the skin. Then make one clean stroke towards the front of the toe. Do a similar stroke on one side of the toenail and then one on the other side.

Please note, if you have diabetes it's important you get your feet checked regularly by your doctor or health clinic.
