Silver surfers suffer less with depression

30 Apr 2014 14:47:10

Older people who spend time online are less likely to suffer from depression, according to a new study.

Could the internet help reduce depression?

According to a recent study, older people who spend time online are less likely to suffer from depression.

The internet is often cited as having a negative influence, making us less sociable, more insulated and even causing depression. However, a recent study of internet use amongst older people has found that it can reduce the chances of depression by more than 30%. Rather than causing feelings of loneliness and isolation, which is an increasing concern among older people living on their own, in many cases it has the opposite effect.

The study carried out in America followed the lives of thousands of retired men and women for six years. It found that internet use among that age group can reduce the chances of depression by more than 30%.

Project Leader Doctor Sheila Cotton say, ‘It all has to do with older persons being able to communicate, to stay in contact with their social networks and just not feel lonely.”

She also says that that it all comes down to how you choose to use your technology. As with most things in life, moderation is best.

“If you sit in front of a computer all day, ignoring the roles you have in life and the things you need to accomplish as part of your daily life, then it’s going to have a negative impact on you. But if you’re using it in moderation and you’re doing things that enhance your life, then the impacts are likely to be positive in terms of health and well-being.”

Cosy Creativity

What you need:

  • A lonely, unpaired sock
  • A needle and thread
  • Craft glue
  • 2 x buttons
  • Some wool

Activity:

  • Put the sock on your hand so that your fingers are in the toe and your thumb is in the heel
  • Make the puppet ‘talk’ and note where its eyes will be
  • Use the needle and thread to sew on two buttons for eyes
  • Cut the wool to size for the sort of hair-do you want. Gather it up and wind a piece of wool around the middle to keep it all together
  • Glue the hair on using the centre-part to anchor it. When the glue is dry, make it more secure by sewing it to the sock in the same place
  • Express yourself with plaits, long straight hair, pigtails or a ponytail

Email your completed puppets to creative@cosyfeet.com and we'll feature them on our website!

Could laughter help improve your memory?

23 Apr 2014 10:13:11

A recent study shows that having a laugh can reduce stress and improve your short-term memory as you get older.

Laughing may help reduce stress and improve memory

They say that laughter is the best medicine and now recent research shows that it might also be good for your memory.

Scientists at Loma Linda University in California recently carried out a study to see if laughter can help improve short-term memory. They asked 20 adults to watch an amusing film for 20 minutes while another group were asked to sit calmly without watching anything. Following this, both groups performed a memory test and had saliva samples taken which were tested for the stress hormone cortisol.

Laughing

The results showed that the people who had watched the comedy performed better in the short-term tests than those who hadn’t been laughing. They also revealed that the levels of the stress hormone cortisol were much lower in the group that had been laughing.

‘Learning ability and delayed recall become more challenging as we age,’ says study author Gurinder Bains.

‘Laughing with friends or even watching 20 minutes of humour on TV, as I do daily, helps me cope with my daily stressors.’

He added that people who are less stressed tend to have a better memory. This is because laughter increases the level of endorphins in the body and this sends dopamine to the brain, providing a feeling of happiness and reward. This changes the activity of brain waves resulting in improved memory.

Get into gardening!

17 Apr 2014 09:36:04

National Gardening Week 2014 aims to encourage everyone to get involved in gardening as an on-going hobby - or for the first time!

Go wild in the garden!

National Gardening Week

National Gardening Week, from 14th to 20th April, is run by the Royal Horticultural Society and aims to encourage people to get involved in gardening.

This year, the RHS is focusing on wildflowers. They want to help the nation plant wildflower meadows from mini-meadows in plant pots to transforming spaces in gardens. Some of their plans include hosting workshops at RHS Gardens and providing online advice, as well as a wildflower seed giveaway.

Sue Biggs, RHS Director General says: “After enjoying the Olympic Park wildflower meadows in 2012 there is a great appetite from the British public to create their own version at home, which is great news for pollinating insects!”

Over the past 50 years there has been a huge reduction in wildflowers in the countryside, which play a vital part in biodiversity and creating a habitat for pollinating insects. Gardens are increasingly recognised as important sources of nectar and pollen for insects. Encouraging people across the country to plant wildflowers will help protect their habitat.
