Cooking is a great way to bond with your child or grandchild. As well as giving you an opportunity to spend time with them, it’s also a fun way to teach then invaluable skills such as team-work, counting and measuring. It also gives you a chance to introduce them to new foods and tastes without putting pressure on them.

While it’s tempting to stick to sweet recipes such as biscuits and cakes, it can be just as fun making healthier options.

The Cosyfeet Community Award

Do you help run a club or group that benefits older people? Could your organisation do even more with a £500 award?

Applications for the Cosyfeet Community Award are now open. It’s available to registered charities or not-for-profit organisations working on projects within Britain that support and enrich older people’s lives.

Regenerate-RISE were the proud winners of last year’s ‘Cosyfeet Community Award’. The organisation aims to eradicate loneliness and isolation among older people. They used the award to help fund a ‘Dream Wall’ initiative, which aims to promote emotional wellbeing. Clients are encouraged to write their ‘dream’ on the ‘Dream Wall’ and sponsorship is raised to cover the costs. So far, money from the Cosyfeet Community Award has been used to help fund riding lessons for a man with learning difficulties, a cinema trip with popcorn for an elderly gentleman who hadn’t been to the pictures in many years, and a shopping trip with lunch for an elderly lady.

Social event organised by Regenerate-RISE

“We aim to support groups that provide practical and emotional help, keep older people active or give them a chance to socialise,” says Managing Director Andrew Peirce. “It might be a friendship group, a lunch club, a telephone befriending service, an exercise class or even special interest group – anything that helps older people feel part of their community.”

To enter for the ‘Cosyfeet Community Award 2016’ apply online at: www.cosyfeet.com/communityaward or call for an application form on 01458 447275. Entries should be received by 31st July 2016. The award can be made as a £500 donation or in the form of a gift of specific items to this value. The winning organisation will be announced in September.

Smile and the world smiles back!

27 Apr 2016 11:54:25

To coincide with National Smile Month, we’ve been finding out how smiling can be good for you, your health and your social life!

Five great reasons to smile!

To coincide with National Smile Month, we’ve been finding out how smiling can be good for you, your health and your social life!

1. Smiling can make you happy (even when you're not)
The simple act of smiling sends a message to your brain telling it that you're happy. And when you're happy, your body pumps out all kinds of feel-good endorphins.

2. Smiling lowers stress and anxiety
It’s not always easy to smile when you’re feeling anxious or stressed but studies show that doing just that has health benefits. When recovering from a stressful situation, study participants who were smiling had lower heart rates than those with neutral facial expressions.

3. Smiling makes you more attractive!
Smiling suggests that you are approachable, easy-going and empathetic. In fact a study in the European Journal of Social Psychology found that smiling makes you more attractive to those you smile at.

4. Smiling keeps you healthy
Smiling can help to strengthen your immune system by making your body produce more white blood cells to help fight illness. One study found that hospitalised children who were visited by story-tellers and puppeteers who made them smile and laugh had higher white blood cell counts than children who weren’t visited.

5. Smiling can help you make friends
If you want to make friends then it helps to turn that frown upside down! Studies have found that people are more willing to engage socially with others who are smiling. A smile is an inviting facial expression that tells people you are willing to talk and interact with them.

The secret behind the quality of our boat shoes

21 Apr 2016 09:32:48

Did you know that our boat shoes are made exclusively for us by a company who make top-end deck shoes for maritime-wear shops?

Welcome aboard to comfort and quality!

Did you know that our extra roomy boat shoes are made exclusively for us by a family-run company who also make standard–size, top-end deck shoes for maritime shops? Since 1984, they’ve been using premium materials and time-honoured techniques to make their boat shoes which are popular in many countries in Europe.

Woody & Sandy

Sandy and Woody, our men’s and women’s boat shoes, are a genuine moccasin construction and need unique shoemaking skills and processes to produce them. They have hand-sewn leather aprons and the uppers need steaming, hammering and moulding on specialist machines which don’t exist in conventional factories.

Leave loneliness behind

13 Apr 2016 12:57:26

Dame Ester Rantzan aims to raise the awareness of loneliness and help everyone enjoy a happy and active retirement with her new campaign.

Top tips to help beat loneliness

Distance from family members, the death of a partner or decline in physical ability can make anyone feel isolated – but it doesn’t have to be that way. Dame Ester Rantzan is aiming to raise the awareness of loneliness and help everyone enjoy a happy and active retirement with her campaign ‘Leave Loneliness Behind.’

Loneliness is a major issue in our society. A study of 1,000 retirement-aged people highlighted that over 55% felt there is a stigma attached to admitting to being lonely – whilst one in four was ‘too ashamed’ to admit their feelings to others.

Loneliness is not to be confused with being alone. Many of us enjoy our own company and choose to live alone but this does not mean we are lonely. Those amongst us who have experienced it know that loneliness is the feeling of not belonging or feeling isolated. Chronic loneliness can have serious consequences for both mental and physical health and letting go of the fear of being judged is the first step towards finding a solution.

Don’t be afraid to speak up

Reaching out to friends or relatives to talk about how you are feeling isn’t always something that feels comfortable but there are services that specialise in listening and helping. The Silver Line Helpline, founded by Esther Rantzen, is a 24hr, confidential and free service that offers information, friendship and advice for older people in the UK – they can even link their callers to local groups and services in their area that could help.

Sometimes just picking up the phone to a family member or friend can help. You don’t have to talk about how you’re feeling but hearing a friendly voice on the other end of the phone can do wonders for your mood.

The charity also runs Silver Circles, which are group calls for people with shared interests. Silver Letters are also an option for those who are hearing impaired or prefer the written word to a phone conversation.

Look for like-minded people or expand your horizons

One way to combat loneliness is to join up with other people who share your interests. Take some time to think about how you would enjoy spending your time and what you would enjoy even more with company. This could be anything! There are clubs and groups for just about everything, from bridge to book clubs, walking groups or even model making. Take a look on the noticeboards in the post office or supermarket. Also have a look in the local library and you’ll often find groups advertise in local newspapers as well. Here are a few ideas to try:

  • Voluntary organisations or rotary clubs
  • Night classes – like IT or life drawing
  • Exercise classes or walking groups – many leisure centres and community hubs have classes especially for older attendees
  • Gardening groups
  • Meditation classes
