Volunteers’ Week (1st – 12th June) is an annual event which celebrates the fantastic contribution that millions of volunteers make across the UK while inspiring others to get involved.

This year, to celebrate the Queen's birthday, the event has been extended to 12th June.

The Royal Voluntary Service, our chosen charity of the year, is one of the largest volunteering organisations in Great Britain. Its 35,000 volunteers help make life better for older people by delivering services that provide friendship and support.

It is an organisation that embraces diversity, with volunteers from different backgrounds and cultures, and with varied skills and experience. Regular roles are available in lunchtime clubs and social clubs and shift work is available for services such as Befriending and Good Neighbours.

Whether you can spare a few hours once a week, once a fortnight or can give a couple of days each month, there is an opportunity to suit your availability. Health, happiness and horticulture

The RHS Chelsea Flower Show begins on 24th May. This year’s theme is Greening Grey Britain which focuses on the link between gardening and well-being.

The RHS Chelsea Flower Show begins on 24th May. Every year the grounds of the Royal Hospital in Chelsea are transformed into show gardens and vibrant displays for the one of the world's most famous flower shows. The show has become an important venue for watching emerging gardening trends. New plants are launched and it’s often described as the garden design equivalent of Paris Fashion Week.

This year’s theme is Greening Grey Britain which focuses on the link between gardening and well-being.

Gardening is a great way to lift your spirits. According to a recent survey carried out by Gardener’s World, it found that gardeners are less likely to display signs associated with unhappiness or depression.

The poll of 1,500 adults in the UK found that 80 % of gardeners feel satisfied with their lives compared with 67 % of non-gardeners.

Gardeners’ World editor Lucy Hall says: ‘We have long suspected it, but our research means we can definitely say gardening makes you happy.’

‘Part of it comes from nurturing something but also a natural optimism that no matter how bad the weather, there’s always next year. It’s also about passing the seed of knowledge and the pleasure that gives.’

Gardening is also good exercise and it gets you out in the fresh air. In fact, outdoor pursuits in general bring the most happiness – 78 % of walkers are satisfied with their lives, as are 75 % of those who fish.

The anatomy of a Cosyfeet sandal

26 May 2016 15:53:33

Our Sunny sandal offers swollen feet a very flexible fit as it has three adjustable fastenings. The two touch-fastening straps across the foot open right out so it’s easy to get on a swollen foot while the strap around the heel is cushioned so it won’t cut into swelling.

Our Sunny sandal offers swollen feet a very flexible fit as it has three adjustable fastenings. The two touch-fastening straps across the foot open right out so it’s easy to get on a swollen foot while the strap around the heel is cushioned so it won’t cut into swelling.

It’s very flattering to swollen feet as it has ample foot cover and it has a broad toe opening that allows toes to sit comfortably. It’s also a good choice for people with sensitive feet as the footbed is very cushioning.

The sole is made from the lightest PU compound available which gives a balance of durability, shock-absorption and lightness. The lasted construction provides a supportive base through the length of the sandal with good flex across the instep.

Hidden histories of a million wartime women

18 May 2016 12:14:49

RVS, our charity of the year, have launched a crowd-funding project to fund the digitisation of diary entries made by women volunteering on the Home Front.

RVS, our charity of the year, have launched a crowd-funding project to fund the digitisation of diary entries made by women volunteering on the Home Front.

More than 300,000 pages of diary entries tell the stories of everyday heroism from female volunteers from over 2,000 cites, towns and villages around Great Britain. The RVS want to carefully photograph and document the first 28,000 pages of the collection, from 1938 – 1941, and make them available online so everyone can access them for free. This will allow them to share the amazing stories that they contain and ensure they aren’t lost forever.

The jobs these million women did were rarely glamorous but it is the selflessness with which these tasks were carried out across Britain which is truly extraordinary. Their success was in using the skills they already had, the skills of wives and mothers; knitting, sewing, cooking, and of course compassion and diplomacy. Where new skills were needed, such as driving in the blackout, extinguishing incendiary bombs or making jumpers from dog’s hair, training was given and a task inevitably ready and waiting.

Every account is written in a different style by a different woman. Some are long, others short but all give a fascinating window on a world which is soon to be out of living memory. Each story brings with it the foibles, idiosyncrasies and passions of its writer.

The RVS are using Kickstarter to fund the project. Kickstarter is a crowdfunding website that allows you to support projects that are close to your heart.

How to make your footwear even roomier!

11 May 2016 09:13:40

Did you know that most of our touch-fastening styles have strap extensions? They lengthen the straps on your footwear to give you even more room.

Do you have exceptionally swollen or bandaged feet? Do you find that the straps on your Cosyfeet footwear aren’t quite long enough? Most of our touch-fastening styles have matching strap extensions which you can buy separately. They lengthen the touch-fastening straps on your footwear to give you even more room.

As you can see in the images below, the extension pieces are made from the same material as the touch-fastening straps.

You can buy matching strap extensions when you place your footwear order. You will be prompted at the shopping basket. Alternatively, you can order them at a later date if you find that the straps on your footwear aren’t quite long enough. Strap extensions cost £4.50 per pair (£3.75 without VAT).
