Get Your Garden Buzzing!

21 May 2017 09:00:00

Did you know that bees pollinate over 80% of our food but their numbers are declining? We can do our bit to help them out by planting more nectar rich flowers and making our plots more bee-friendly.

Give bees a chance!

Bee

Insect pollination is crucial to gardens. Insects, such as bees and butterflies, fly from flower to flower to collect nectar.  In the process, pollen collects on their bodies and rubs off on other flowers that they visit. This fertilises the flower and the plant will then grow seeds and the fruit around the seeds. Without insect pollination, many food plants that we grow in our gardens can’t complete the pollination process and won’t produce fruits or vegetables.

You can make your garden a haven for bees and butterflies by planting shrubs and flowers known to be attractive to bees, butterflies and other pollinators. Maintaining a natural area with nettles, grasses and wildflowers is good, but not always practical. By providing flowers from early spring, when the first solitary bees emerge, until autumn, you will attract a variety of insects to your garden.

Foxglove

There are a wide range of plants, shrubs and herbs, a few listed below, which are attractive to bees, butterflies and other pollinators. They are easy to grow and provide great colour in the garden.

Oregano

Bees and butterflies seek out nectar, it's all about food.  Providing water is also a bonus, a small pond or bird bath filled up will help attract birds.

Butterflies often prefer a large flower head to land on, bees can climb into Foxgloves but like open flowers as well. Bees see colour differently, and are attracted to blues (and yellow which they see as blue). Most herbs are bee magnets, Oregano and Chives are often covered with masses of bees and insects.

There are some plants which are strongly recommended: the common Buddleia which is known as the butterfly bush but really does get covered in butterflies. Equally attractive is the late summer flowering Sedum which can be planted around the base of the Buddleia to provide a butterfly feast. Bees are drawn to OreganoAlliums, FoxglovesVeronicastrum and Rudbeckias.

Make Your Own Basket Flower Arrangement

19 May 2017 09:00:00

Follow our simple step-by-step guide to create your own pretty basket arrangement – perfect as a gift or a decoration to brighten up any room!

EquipmentThis simple step-by-step guide will have you making beautiful arrangements in no time!

What you will need:

-          A container or basket (waterproof lined)

-          Floral foam

-          A sink full of cold water

-          An elastic band or florist tape

-          Secateurs or florist scissors

-          Flowers and foliage

Method:

    1. Float floral foam on the surface of a sink of water – do not force it under the water as this will create air-pockets:

Step 1

    2. Once soaked – secure it within your container, either with an elastic band, as we have done, or florist tape:

    Step 2

    3. Start by creating a foliage outline, this should stem from a central focal point to ensure a pleasing shape. As you do this, you can establish the desired shape, width and height:

    Step 3

    4. Add main focal flowers to the top and around the sides:

    Step 4

    5. Add filler flowers in between, at different heights to add interest. Place some deep within the design to create depth:

    Step 5

    6. Add extra foliage to cover any exposed foam:

    Step 6

    7. Check your arrangement from every angle for evenness and foam coverage. Add any decorative touches such as bows, tags, etc and your arrangement is complete:

    Step 7

    8. Top up the container with water on a daily basis and your arrangement should last for around two weeks:

Step 8

A big thank you to our local florist from Abundiflora in Glastonbury for providing such a great step-by-step guide. Have you made your own arrangement? We’d love to see it! Send your photos to creativity@cosyfeet.com and we’ll share them on social media

Foot Health Awareness Month

18 May 2017 09:51:27

May is World Foot Health Awareness month, an international event to raise awareness of the importance of good foot health. This year the theme is ‘Let’s heal the heel pain!’

May is World Foot Health Awareness month, an international event to raise awareness of the importance of good foot health. This year the theme is ‘Let’s heal the heel pain!’

Heal the heel pain

Heel pain is the most common foot problem worldwide. It usually affects one foot and the pain intensity builds up over time. This year’s theme focuses on the fact that anyone can get heel pain. An estimated 1 in 10 people will experience heel pain at least once in their life time.

The causes of heel pain are varied and include nerve entrapment, disc disease, peripheral neuropathy, metabolic-like arthritis, gout, sickle cell disease, fibromyalgia, ankylosing spondylitis and trauma.

The most common heel pain is plantar fasciitis. It is a persistent injury giving both clinician and patient a challenge for longevity of treatment.

What is plantar fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis means inflammation of your plantar fascia. Your plantar fascia is a band of tissue that stretches from your heel to your middle foot bones. It supports the arch of your foot and acts as a shock-absorber in your foot.

What causes plantar fasciitis?

  • If you are on your feet for a lot of the time, or if you do lots of walking or running.
  • If you have been wearing shoes with poor cushioning or poor arch support.
  • If you are overweight - this will put extra strain on your heel.
  • If there is overuse or sudden stretching of your sole.

Often there is no apparent cause for plantar fasciitis, particularly in older people.

What are the symptoms of plantar fasciitis?

Pain is the main symptom. This can be anywhere on the underside of your heel. The pain is often worst when you take your first steps in the morning or after long periods of rest where no weight is placed on your foot. Gentle exercise may ease things a little as the day goes by, but a long walk or being on your feet for a long time often makes the pain worse. Resting your foot usually eases the pain.

Which products can help?

Cosyfeet has a range of products that can help relieve the pain of plantar fasciitis:
