Walking can help you live a happier life!

30 Jul 2012 12:21:05

We know that walking is good for our health. It can lower cholesterol and blood pressure, improve our lung capacity and may even reduce the pain and joint swelling.

We all know that regular walking is good for our physical health. It can lower cholesterol and blood pressure, improve our lung capacity and may even reduce the pain and joint swelling that accompanies arthritis.

But did you know that recent studies have shown it can also be helpful for our mental health?

According to researchers in Scotland, something as simple as going for a brisk stroll could play an important role in fighting depression.

A study, in the journal of Mental Health and Physical Activity, showed that walking has a "large effect" on depression. Not only that, but it has the advantages of being easily undertaken by most people, incurring little or no financial cost and being relatively easy to incorporate into daily living.

Prof Adrian Taylor, who studies the effects of exercise on depression, addiction and stress at the University of Exeter, says, "The beauty of walking is that everybody does it."

He added: "There are benefits for a mental-health condition like depression."

The mental-health charity Mind said its own research found that spending time outdoors helped people's mental health.

Its chief executive, Paul Farmer, said: "To get the most from outdoor activities it's important to find a type of exercise you love and can stick at. Try different things, be it walking, cycling, gardening or even open-water swimming.

"Exercising with others can have even greater impact, as it provides an opportunity to strengthen social networks, talk through problems with others or simply laugh and enjoy a break from family and work. So ask a friend to join you."

Want to keep active? Then there’s one part of your body you mustn’t neglect!

16 Jul 2012 09:09:03

We all know that staying active is important as we get older. It can keep us live longer and help us stay happy and independent.

We all know that staying active is important as we get older. It can keep us live longer and help us stay happy and independent. It’s also vital for our health. But there’s a part of our body that’s often neglected and yet without it, keeping active would be impossible - our feet.

Following a good foot care routine will help keep you on the move and should be as much a part of your daily routine as brushing your teeth. The Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists recommends this simple daily routine:

  • Wash your feet every day in warm soapy water (don’t soak them as this might destroy the natural oils) and dry thoroughly, especially between the toes.
  • If you can see and reach your toe nails, cut them after a bath when they’re softer. Cut across, not too short, and not down at the corners as this can lead to in-growing toe nails.
  • Any minor cuts or abrasions should be covered with a clean, dry dressing and blisters should be left to dry on their own. Do not burst them yourself.
  • It’s important that you seek professional help if wounds don't heal quickly. Wounds (sometimes called ulcers) should be assessed and treated as a matter of urgency especially if there is redness or swelling around the area.
  • Never ignore minor foot troubles. If your feet hurt, something is wrong! Symptoms such as persistent pain, soreness or redness are warning signs. You can prevent foot problems before they occur by visiting a podiatrist for advice on how to keep your feet healthy.

Sandals or wellies? Find out on 15th July!

    13 Jul 2012 12:00:52

St. Swithin's Day, on 15th July, is a day on which people closely watch the weather. According to tradition whatever the weather, it will continue for the next forty days.

St. Swithin's Day, on 15th July, is a day on which people closely watch the weather. That’s because according to tradition whatever the weather is like on St. Swithin's Day, it will continue for the next forty days. This weather-rhyme is well known throughout the British Isles since Elizabethan times:

'St. Swithin's day if thou dost rain
For forty days it will remain
St. Swithin's day if thou be fair
For forty days 'twill rain nae mair.”

Why do people watch the weather on St. Swithin's day?

St Swithin was a 9th Century bishop. Legend has it that he asked to be buried outside Winchester Cathedral when he died but his remains were dug up 9 years later on 15th July, 971 and moved inside the building. This act is said to have coincided with 40 days and 40 nights of violent storms, indicating his displeasure at being moved. This led to the old wives' tale that if it rains on St Swithin's Day, it will rain for the next 40 days while a fine 15th July will be followed by 40 days of dry weather.

However, according to the Met Office, this old wives' tale is nothing more than a myth. It’s been put to the test on 55 occasions when it’s been wet on St Swithin's Day and 40 days of rain did not follow!

Our Web Assistant, Andrew Speed, recently appeared in an article in the Wells Journal about successful students in Somerset. Congratulations Andy!

    Wells Journal

Andrew, is 21 and lives in Shepton Mallet. He left Whitstone School when he was 16 to study at Strode College where he first gained a Level 3 National Diploma in IT Practitioners (Triple Distinction), before going on to achieve the highest possible grade of Distinction for his Foundation Degree at Strode.

He is now working with websites, e-marketing and graphics at Cosyfeet in Street, where he completed a work placement as part of his course. Andrew is also studying with the Open University to top-up his Foundation Degree to an Open Degree in Computing and IT.

He was delighted when Strode introduced their Foundation Degree in E-Business Technologies because it meant he could take his learning to a higher level at the college where he was happy and successful.

Studying locally had other benefits too.

Andrew said: "The atmosphere and support at Strode is great, and I really appreciated the opportunity to stay there and continue my studies to a higher level. My Foundation Degree has given me a great deal of real world skills, with the bonus of being able to commute from home and reduce my costs."
