Find out what our fit-tester thinks!

22 Jul 2013 15:35:51

Before going into production, all our footwear is wear-tested to make sure it’s right for our customers. Find out what one of our fit-testers had to say about ‘Enjoy’.

Gill and our ‘Enjoy’ sandal

At Cosyfeet, we have a group of fantastic fit testers who try out our shoes to make sure they’re right for our customers.

Enjoy

Gill is one of our fit testers. She enjoys socialising and likes to look stylish. Four years ago an illness left her with a drop foot and contusion in one leg. She also has a lipoma resulting in her needing extra space around the front of her ankle. Gill has wear-tested our Enjoy sandals and this is what she had to say:

“Enjoy is going to be a definite summer favourite for me. I need shoes that are comfortable and safe and the straps enable me to adjust the sandals to fit me securely. Enjoy is incredibly comfortable making them amazing to wear. The icing on the cake is that they tick the box for style. I love being seen out in them!”

Keeping cool in the heat

16 Jul 2013 09:13:32

It’s great that we’re enjoying some lovely weather at last, but it’s also important that we look after ourselves in the heat.

It’s wonderful to have some sunny weather for a change but when the temperature starts to climb, there can be some unpleasant side effects from the heat.

What are the risks of hot weather?

In a severe heat wave you may get dehydrated and your body may overheat, leading to heat exhaustion or heatstroke. Both need urgent treatment. The symptoms of heat exhaustion include headaches, dizziness, nausea and vomiting, muscle weakness or cramps, pale skin, and a high temperature. You should move somewhere cool and drink plenty of water or fruit juice. If you can, take a lukewarm shower, or sponge yourself down with cold water.

Heatstroke can develop if heat exhaustion is left untreated, but it can also occur suddenly and without warning. Symptoms include headaches, nausea, an intense thirst, sleepiness, hot, red and dry skin, a sudden rise in temperature, confusion, aggression, convulsions and loss of consciousness. Heatstroke can result in irreversible damage to your body, including the brain, or death.

Here are our top tips for staying safe when it’s hot:

  • Stay inside during the hottest time of the day (11am – 3pm)
  • Close the curtains in rooms that get a lot of sun
  • Keep windows closed while the room is cooler than it is outside. Open them when the temperature inside rises, and at night for ventilation. If you are worried about security, at least open windows on the first floor and above
  • Use sunscreen lotion of factor 15 or above when you’re out and about
  • When travelling always carry a bottle of water
  • Limit activities like housework and gardening to cooler times of the day
  • Wear lose, light weight, cotton clothing
  • Drink lots of fluids and eat more cold foods such as salad and fruit, which contain water
  • Take cool showers or baths, and splash yourself several times a day with cold water, particularly your face and the back of your neck

What else can you do to stay cool?

Keep an eye on the weather reports, which will let you know if a heat wave is on its way. Also if you have breathing problems or a heart condition, your symptoms might get worse when it’s very hot, so it may be a good idea to contact your GP for advice.

What’s on in July?

10 Jul 2013 09:34:23

If you fancy getting out and about this July, there are lots of great events to enjoy around the UK.

Things to do in July

There are lots of interesting things going on around the UK this month. This is just a small handful of them:

In Scotland, the Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival takes place from 19th to 28th July. The festival includes traditional jazz as well as swing, mainstream jazz and occasionally some more modern groups.

Whitstable Oyster Festival is a six day event that takes place from 27th July. It’s held in Whitstable, Kent each year to celebrate the town's links with the oyster industry.

The Big Cheese, 26th - 28th July, is a spectacular festival set in the shadows of one of Europe's largest castles. Every year the town of Caerphilly comes to life for a celebration of food, drink, culture and music. Over 50 Welsh producers gather to sell their delicious cakes, wine, liquors, sweets, chocolate, cheese and pickles.

In Northern Ireland, the Red Sails Festival is held in Portstewart from Sun 21st to Sat 27th July. This is a family-friendly festival with lots of free music from local bands and orchestras, Irish dancing and a spectacular firework display to end the festivities.

Whatever you do and wherever you go this July, we hope you have fun! And if you know of any other events that are on this month, we’d love to hear from you.

Reduce the risk of developing dementia

5 Jul 2013 10:01:12

Keeping mentally active could help protect your brain in old age a recent study suggests.

Keeping dementia at bay

According to the BBC News, a recent study shows that keeping mentally active could help protect the brain in old age.

In a recent US study, 294 people were given tests that measured memory and thinking, every year for about six years, until their deaths.

They also answered a questionnaire about whether they read books, wrote letters and took part in other activities linked to mental stimulation during childhood, adolescence, middle age and in later life.

After death, their brains were examined for evidence of the physical signs of dementia, such as brain lesions and plaques.

The study found that those who had a record of keeping the brain busy had a rate of cognitive decline estimated at 15% slower than those who did not.

Dr Robert Wilson, who led the study, said the research suggested exercising the brain across a lifetime was important for brain health in old age.

He told the BBC News: "The brain that we have in old age depends in part on what we habitually ask it to do in life. What you do during your lifetime has a great impact on the likelihood these age-related diseases are going to be expressed."
