Top tips for better health

30 Jul 2014 11:42:14

Being healthier doesn't have to mean overhauling your entire lifestyle. Sometimes all it takes is a few simple changes.

Ten simple things to help you stay healthy:

  1. 1. Make sure you drink enough. Experts recommend that we drink the equivalent of 8 medium-size glasses of water a day. Contrary to some advice tea, coffee and soft drinks count but make sure you’re aware of hidden sugars.
  2. 2. Eat regularly. This helps keep energy levels at a constant and can even help prevent you from gaining weight.
  3. 3. Don’t forget to floss! Removing pieces of food and plaque from between your teeth can help prevent gum disease.
  4. 4. Get moving. You should aim for at least 2-3 hours of exercise a week. Swimming, Yoga, Pilates and walking are particularly beneficial as they build muscle and bone density which is important as you get older.
  5. 5. Keep your mind active. Activities such as reading, writing, crosswords and Sudoku can all help delay memory loss.
  6. 6. Don’t forget your feet. Without comfortable feet, it’s difficult to lead an active life. Make sure you buy footwear that fits properly and gives you enough stability and shock-absorption.
  7. 7. Make sure you’re getting enough vitamin D. This is critical for bone health. Rather than just relying on the sun, try taking a supplement.
  8. 8. Have regular check-ups. Try and have your eyes tested at least every two years to allow ophthalmologists to diagnose and treat conditions early.
  9. 9. Get involved. Research shows that having a hobby you can share with others is good for your happiness levels which in turn is good for your overall health.
  10. 10. Sleep well. Don’t underestimate the power of a good night’s sleep. If you have trouble sleeping, try establishing a bedtime routine such as a warm bath followed by a milky drink.

Love your local park

25 Jul 2014 14:44:06

From 25th July – 3rd August it’s Love Parks Week! The aim of the campaign is to encourage us to visit, enjoy and take pride in our local parks and green spaces.

Love Parks Week

From 25th July – 3rd August, Love Parks Week is raising awareness of the importance of parks and green spaces.

It began in 2006 with a simple aim: to encourage people to enjoy and take pride in their local parks and green spaces, driving home the message that they’re essential to healthy, happy and strong communities.

Love Parks Week

During the week there are lots of events planned at parks all over the country. Last year over 1,100 took place with approximately 1.4 million people participating. It doesn't matter how large or small an event is, from nature walks to large family festivals, each one makes a difference.

To get involved and find out about events in your area, go to www.loveparksweek.org.uk.

Tigger bounces back thanks to PDSA

17 Jul 2014 11:44:29

The PDSA, our chosen charity of the year, saved the life of Tigger the cat after he was blown from a third floor apartment.

PDSA saves Tigger the cat

He may be named after the popular character from Winnie the Pooh stories, but one Scottish cat has proved that not every Tigger can bounce after a 35-foot fall from a third floor apartment left him fighting for life.

The nine-year-old ginger cat needed life-saving emergency treatment at PDSA’s pet hospital in Edinburgh after being blown from a third floor balcony during the recent bad weather.

Tigger’s owner, Alexis Lennie, became concerned when he went missing one evening. After a frantic search, she discovered a neighbour had found the badly injured cat and rushed him for urgent veterinary care.

Once reunited, Alexis took Tigger to PDSA’s hospital on Hutchison Crossway, where the charity’s vets and nurses battled to stabilise his condition. As well as two broken ankles, Tigger also had a build-up of fluid on his lungs.

PDSA vet Andrew Hogg said: “Tigger is very fortunate to have been found alive and well after such a fall. His leg injuries are among the worst I have seen - but our first priority was to drain the fluid from his chest and make sure he was strong enough for us to operate and repair his broken bones.

“The fractures to his right ankle required particularly complex surgery because a large piece of bone had completely broken away. An external fixator is currently holding the bone fragments in place to allow them to knit back together.”

Since the surgery Tigger has made steady progress and is a regularly visitor at PDSA for check-ups.

Alexis says: “Tigger has adapted well to his external fixators. He’s still on cage rest at the moment, but he’s really eager to get out and about every time I open the cage to feed and clean him.

“He’s is not out the woods yet as we don’t know if the bones will heal but PDSA have gave him every possible chance there is. The vets and nurses have been brilliant - I don’t know where I would be without them.”

The PDSA is our chosen charity of the year. We aim to raise £5000 to help the important job they do treating the sick and injured pets of people in need.
