World Reflexology Week

26 Sep 2012 10:39:04

Running from 24-30 September 2012, World Reflexology Week aims to raise awareness of the many benefits of this complementary therapy. But what exactly is reflexology?

Reflexology dates back as far as Ancient Egypt. It was long seen as an effective healer for physical ailments until medicine became more advanced. Reflexologists believe that areas on your feet, and even on your hands, relate to different parts of your body and can bring relief for a whole host of conditions. Each toe and part of your foot represents a part of the body – for example the head is connected to the big toe while the ear is under your little toe!

The idea is that by using hot, cold, plasters and herbal remedies, you can treat one part of the body and influence another at the same time. And research has shown many benefits: reduced depression, eased effects for cancer patients undergoing treatment and of course general relaxation.

In the UK, the Association of Reflexologists, is the largest, leading independent body for Reflexologists. Throughout World Reflexology Week they’ll be organising stalls and events to promote reflexology.

National Eye Health Week

19 Sep 2012 10:40:14

National Eye Health Week takes place 17 - 23 September 2012. This is when charities, organisations and health professionals from across the UK join together to promote the importance of eye health.

National Eye Health Week was established to encourage people to take better care of their eyes and have regular sight tests. Sight tests are essential for maintaining healthy eyes but there are other things you can do to look after your eyes.

Diet
Studies show that what we eat can affect our vision. Foods recommended for eye health include:

  • Broad leaf greens such as kale and spinach
  • Brightly coloured fruit and veg such as corn, carrots, orange sweet peppers and oranges
  • Oily fish like salmon, tuna and mackerel
  • Broccoli
  • Eggs

Exercise and eyesight
Lack of exercise contributes significantly to several eye conditions, particularly amongst people aged 60 and over. Exercise may reduce the risk of sight loss from narrowing or hardening of the arteries, high blood pressure and diabetes.

Alcohol
Excessive alcohol consumption can lead to serious health conditions which can have a detrimental effect on your eye health.

Smoking
After ageing, smoking is the biggest risk factor for developing macular degeneration. Smoking also increases your risk of developing cataracts.

The sun
Protecting your eyes from the sun is very important and should not be underestimated. Under no circumstances should you ever look at the sun directly. Your sunglasses should have the CE mark on them which ensures that they are giving you the right level of ultraviolet protection

Exercise your feet!

10 Sep 2012 09:21:49

Exercise is an important part of keeping feet healthy. It tones up muscles, helps to strengthen arches and stimulates blood circulation. Read more...

It’s important that we look after our feet, especially as we get older. The Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists recommend the following exercises to help keep feet healthy:

1). Calf stretches help keep feet supple and keep a good range of movement. To stretch your calf and heel, stand facing a wall with feet hip width apart and slightly bent at the knee. Take one step forwards, and using your arms to lean against the wall, keep your front leg bent and the leg behind straight. Both feet should be flat on the ground.

2). Lean in towards the wall, as you do, you should feel your muscles stretching in your calf and heel. Hold and slowly return to a standing position. Do this with each leg about five times.

3). Circle your feet ten times in each direction, keeping your leg as still as possible.

4). Consciously straighten your toes and wriggle them around. Raise, point, then curl your toes for five seconds each, repeated ten times – this is particularly good for toe cramps or hammer toes.

5). Circle the alphabet with your feet.

Reduce the risk of DVT...

5 Sep 2012 09:50:14

Many of us wait until September and October to go away so we can avoid the school holidays. If you’re going to be travelling and are likely to be sitting still for long periods, we recommend a pair of Anti-DVT Flysafe Travel socks.

Many of us wait until September and October to go away so we can avoid the school holidays. If you’re going to be travelling and are likely to be sitting still for long periods, we recommend a pair of Anti-DVT Flysafe Travel socks. Not just for aeroplanes, we also suggest wearing them on long car, train or coach journeys. These normal–looking socks help stimulate circulation by means of graduated compression and reduce the risk of Deep Vein Thrombosis. They can also help prevent swollen ankles and leg fatigue.
