Helping patients at the Bristol Royal Infirmary

27 Sep 2013 07:23:14

Ward 23 at the BRI cares for elderly patients from across the South West. Many of the patients arrive at hospital with nothing so the staff fundraise to buy items to try and make their stay more comfortable.

Making hospital stays more comfortable

Ward 23 at the Bristol Royal Infirmary cares for elderly patients from across Bristol and the South West. 99% of the people cared for here are admitted as emergencies often with injuries occurring as a result of dementia.

Sadly the majority of the patients have either no living relatives or supportive carers to help take care of them. This means that they often arrive at hospital with nothing.

The staff at the hospital fundraise to buy items to try and make their stay a little more comfortable. This may be slippers and toiletries or books to read and games to play which help ease the boredom of a lengthy hospital stay.

Sue Nicholls, the ward clerk, told us “Some of our patients have led incredible lives, through things like The Great Depression and the war and we feel it’s important we do our very best for them. We are incredibly grateful for any donations - a small item we can put into a hamper for a raffle; or to perhaps to provide some nice shower gel or talc for them to use.”

Cosyfeet recently sent some slippers to the ward to give to patients with swollen feet.

“The slippers are great and we have already handed some of them out to patients,” said Sue. “Many of our patients come in with no slippers at all and although we supply slipper socks it is not the same as wearing a proper pair of slippers to enable safe mobilisation. It is only with the kindness and generosity of people such as yourself that we are able to achieve what we do for our patients.”

Know Your Numbers Week (16th-22nd September)

19 Sep 2013 09:21:15

Despite its name, this awareness week has nothing to do with maths or counting. It’s all about encouraging us to monitor our blood pressure and know our numbers!

Do you know your numbers?

“Know Your Numbers Week” (16th -22nd September) is Blood Pressure UK's awareness campaign. It encourages people across the UK to know their blood pressure numbers and to take action to maintain a healthy measurement.

Since its launch over 10 years ago, ‘Know your Numbers Week’ has ensured that more than 1.5million people have had their blood pressure checked so that they know their blood pressure numbers in the same way as their height and weight.

The week involves hundreds of organisations signing up to provide free blood pressure tests at venues known as Pressure Stations. They’re located throughout the community at pharmacies, workplaces, GP surgeries, hospitals, health clubs, leisure centres, shopping centres and supermarkets.

High blood pressure is the underlying cause of many serious problems including heart attacks and strokes, so it’s something you cannot afford to ignore.

The Blood Pressure Association website at www.bloodpressureuk.org will let you search for your nearest Pressure Station so you can have a free blood pressure test. It also has a short quiz to help you self-assess the impact your lifestyle has on your blood pressure.

Look after your back

11 Sep 2013 09:15:39

According to Backcare, the charity for healthier backs, four out of five adults will experience back pain at some stage in their life. So what steps can you take to help your back stay healthy?

Top 10 tips for a healthy back

Back pain is very common. In fact it’s estimated that 80% of adults will experience it at some point in their life. These simple measures can help your back stay healthy and reduce the chances of developing pain.

  1. 1. Exercise your back regularly. Walking, swimming and exercise bikes are all excellent ways to strengthen your back muscles.
  2. 2. Always bend your knees and your hips, not your back.
  3. 3. Never twist and bend at the same time.
  4. 4. Always lift and carry objects close to your body.
  5. 5. Try to carry larger loads in a rucksack and avoid sling bags.
  6. 6. Maintain a good posture. Avoid slumping in your chair, hunching over a desk or walking with your shoulders hunched.
  7. 7. Use a chair with a backrest. Sit with your feet flat on the floor or on a footrest. Change how you sit every few minutes.
  8. 8. Stop smoking. It’s thought that smoking reduces the blood supply to the discs between the vertebrae and this may lead to degeneration of these discs.
  9. 9. Lose any excess weight.
  10. 10. Choose a mattress suited to your height, weight and sleeping position.
