Walking more could ‘save thousands'

30 Oct 2013 14:32:37

Tens of thousands of lives could be saved each year in the UK if people got off the sofa and stretched their legs, say charities.

Getting active saves lives

According to a recent report, tens of thousands of lives could be saved each year in the UK if people simply walked more.

The Ramblers and Macmillan Cancer Support concluded in their “Walking Works" report that walking could transform people's health by decreasing the odds of heart problems and stroke as well as making a difference in conditions such as type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer's and many cancers.

According to the report, walking works for a number of reasons:

  • Walking is already one of most popular physical activities in the world and it’s open to nearly everyone
  • Walking is free – you don’t need expensive gym membership or special shoes to take part
  • You can wear everyday clothes so you won’t feel you stand out on the street
  • Walking is gentle, so you’re unlikely to get injured
  • It’s fun to get together with friends and go for a walk
  • It’s a healthy way of getting where you need to be
  • You can do it almost anywhere at any time
  • You can start off slowly and build up gradually as you get more confident

If you don't walk already and want to find out how to get started, you’ll find lots of tips and advice on the ‘Walking for Health’ website at www.walkingforhealth.org.uk

Cosyfeet staff ‘make a difference’

24 Oct 2013 09:45:14

This October, the CSV are encouraging people to ‘make a difference’ by taking part in voluntary work. We've been finding how our staff are helping out in the local community.

Rewarding work at an animal care centre

This October, the Community Service Volunteers (CSV) are encouraging people to make a difference by taking part in voluntary work. We thought it would be interesting to find out if any of our staff are involved in voluntary work within the local community.

We caught up Janine Fox, our Stock Control Administrator, and this is what she had to say about her voluntary work at a local animal centre:

“I volunteer at Secret World Animal Centre half a day each week. Secret World is a charity that specialises in the rescue, rehabilitation and release of Britain’s orphaned, injured and sick wildlife.

I love my visits to secret world each week. Hedgehogs are my favourite animals that come to the rescue centre and the baby ones are lovely. I find it really rewarding to help look after the wildlife within my local community.”

Cosyfeet in the community

16 Oct 2013 12:29:11

This October, the CSV are encouraging people to ‘make a difference’ by taking part in voluntary work. We asked our staff if any of them are involved in volunteering.

Helping to make a difference in our community

This October, the Community Service Volunteers (CSV) are encouraging people to ‘make a difference’ by taking part in voluntary work.

We thought it would be interesting to find out if any of our staff are involved in voluntary work within the local community. It turns out that we’re a very helpful bunch of people!

Cosyfeet staff get involved in all kinds of volunteering including helping out at a local athletics club, volunteering at an animal care centre, organising fundraising activities at a primary school and helping out at a local scouts group.

One of the ways that the company as a whole has got involved in volunteering is through a mentoring programme called ‘Raising Aspirations’ at a local secondary school. The scheme, which has been running for two years, aims to help young people develop their self-belief and confidence so that they can go on to fulfil their potential.

The University of East London is measuring the impact of the programme and has reported that the scheme is having a positive effect on students in terms of their attitude to education.

One mentee said that being part of the programme has really benefitted her emotionally and to have someone to talk to on a one-to-one basis has been very helpful. Another mentee said that his mentor encourages him to try new things and this has helped him overcome his shyness and build confidence.

At the moment, 80 volunteers from local businesses, (including Kirsten Vowles from Cosyfeet, pictured below) are providing one-to-one mentoring support to young people.

If you are thinking about getting involved in volunteering or already volunteer in your community we’d love to hear about it. Why not tell us about it in the message box below.

The Enjoy sandal is one of a brand new range of styles launched to celebrate Cosyfeet’s 30th anniversary of making extra roomy footwear for swollen and extra wide feet.

Pretty Shoes With Extra Room:

Quoted from Savista Magazine -

"Enjoy your footwear

The Enjoy sandal is one of a brand new range of styles launched to celebrate Cosyfeet’s 30th anniversary of making extra roomy footwear for swollen and extra wide feet.

With a EEEEE+ width as standard, the Enjoy sandal is made from beautifully soft leathers and is very adjustable thanks to three touch-fastening straps across the instep and one around the back of the heel. These secure straps adjust to fit almost any swollen or misshapen foot in comfort, and the backstrap has been designed to fit a swollen or narrow ankle.

The Enjoy opens out to make it easy to get on and off a swollen foot. A soft, cushioned footbed and shock-absorbing sole also make this an extremely comfy sandal.

The Enjoy is available in Biscuit leather, Black leather or Stone leather and is priced at £59.00, (or £49.17 if you qualify for VAT relief due to a chronic medical condition).  It comes in sizes 3 to 9 including half sizes. Strap extensions are also available for especially swollen feet.

Paradise for your feet

Part shoe and part sandal, this comfy yet pretty, soft leather style is designed to keepyour feet cool but protected all year round. It comes in a EEEEE+ fitting as standard and has an adjustable, touch-fastening strap which makes it easy to put on a swollen foot.

The Paradise has a deep toe area which is completely seam-free to avoid chafing vulnerable toes, and the shoe opening is edged with a soft, padded collar for cushioned comfort. A soft, odour-resistant lining and a lightweight, flexible sole also make the Paradise extremely comfortable to wear.

The Paradise is available in Black leather, Stone leather or Teal leather and is priced at £59.00, (or £47.20 if you qualify for VAT relief due to a chronic medical condition).  It comes in sizes 3 to 9 including half sizes. Strap extensions are also available for especially swollen feet."

Trained dogs could help people with diabetes

11 Oct 2013 09:21:13

According to research conducted by the University of Bristol, trained dogs could be used to help diabetic owners stay healthy and independent.

Dogs improve lives of owners with diabetes

Research conducted by the University of Bristol shows that dogs can detect low blood sugar levels in people with diabetes.

Seventeen dogs were used in the study after being specially trained by the charity, Medical Detection Dogs. All the dogs improved the quality of life of their owners by alerting them to falls in blood sugar levels.  This helped to reduce ambulance call outs and instances of unconsciousness as well as improving blood glucose control.

In the future, trained dogs could be used more to help their diabetic owners stay healthy and independent.

If you have diabetes, getting out to walk a dog, even one that hasn’t been specially trained, can be one of the best things you can do for your health, improving circulation, and helping you stay trim.

Savista Magazine - 10th October 2013

Bed Socks Can Help You Sleep:

Quoted from Savista Magazine -

"Dr Kurt Krauchi and his team at the Sleep Laboratory in Basel monitored the body temperature and functions of a group of young, healthy men as they nodded off. In every case, they fell asleep immediately after a shift in blood flow to hands and feet.

The study, published in the journal Nature, seems to indicate that as we approach the threshold of sleep, the body’s temperature regulation system moves heat from its core to our extremities i.e. our hands and feet.

The phenomenon is closely related to the release of hormones such as melatonin, which regulate sleepiness and wakefulness.

The researchers say that bed socks may not directly cause sleep, but can trigger widening of the blood vessels, which in turn switches the body’s sleep mechanism on.

If your extremities are cold, it inhibits the free flow of blood and your sleep hormones fail to kick in, which can cause insomnia.

Super-soft Bed Socks from Cosyfeet are knitted from brushed yarn that retains warmth, making them ideal for anyone who suffers with poor circulation or cold feet at night. They are loose around the ankles for extra comfort.

They come in a range of colours and are available in Standard Width or Extra Roomy, for anyone who suffers from swollen feet or ankles.

Sizes include small (fits shoe size 4-7) medium (fits shoe size 6-11) and large (fits shoe size 11-13). A two-pair pack costs £11.00 for Standard Width and £12.00 for Extra Roomy."
