Oedema is the medical term for fluid retention. It often occurs in the lower part of the body resulting in swollen feet and ankles.

Oedema can be caused by medical conditions such as heart failure, kidney disease and Lymphoedema. It can also be the result of side effects from certain medications. Oedema can even occur in a fit and healthy person under certain conditions such as heat or immobility during a flight but this will usually resolve without treatment.

The treatment for oedema depends on the underlying cause of the condition but there are a few general measures you can take to improve the swelling. Moderate exercise such as walking, followed by elevating your feet, can help increase circulation and disperse the fluid which has accumulated. Surgical stockings, prescribed by a healthcare professional, can help fluid drainage and prevent further swelling. If your oedema is chronic you should consult your doctor.
