How are shoe widths measured?

As well as different lengths, shoes can come in different width fittings. But how do you tell the difference between standard and wide shoes?

As well as different lengths, shoes can come in different width fittings. But how do you tell the difference between standard and wide shoes? Finding the right width is essential to a proper fit. Shoes that fit well don’t just mean better comfort, they also ensure good foot health.

As a general guide, most women’s shoes are sold in a standard D fitting. Wide-fitting shoes start at an E. The addition of more letters means a wider shoe. The letter E standing alone is an extra-wide shoe size. The addition of two additional Es to the size indicates the shoe is two sizes wider than a single E size and so on.

The majority of women’s wide-fitting shoes that you’ll find on the high street are an E or EE. Occasionally you may find an EEE fitting. Cosyfeet is an EEEEE+ so it’s much wider and deeper than ordinary wide-fitting footwear.

Most men’s shoes are sold in a standard F fitting. Wide-fitting shoes start at a G. Cosyfeet men’s shoes are an HH+ which is much roomier than the wide-fitting shoes you’ll find on the high street. They are very deep and roomy and fit swollen feet with ease.
