Deaf Awareness Week

As part of Deaf Awareness Week, the charity Action on Hearing Loss are looking at how small changes can have a big impact on people who are deaf or have hearing loss.

They are asking people to share their experiences so they can provide helpful tips to friends, family and colleagues as well as staff in bars, restaurants, shops and other public buildings, to encourage them to become more deaf aware.

Here are some of their top tips for communicating with anyone who is deaf or hard of hearing:

  • Get the listeners attention before you start speaking
  • Be face to face with the person you’re talking to
  • Don’t cover your mouth with your hand or clothing
  • Speak clearly but not too slowly
  • Exaggerated lip movements are harder to lipread
  • Shouting is uncomfortable for hearing aid users and looks aggressive
  • Talk directly to the person, not the interpreter
  • Don’t keep repeating things; say them in a different way
  • Places with good lighting and little background noise are best for conversations

Do you have any other tips for communicating with those who are deaf or hard of hearing? Or have you had a good experience with members of the public being courteous and helpful? Email us at community@cosyfeet.com. We’d love to hear from you.
