If you suffer from swollen feet you are not alone. It is a common condition that results from fluid build-up in body tissue and is often a response to inflammation or injury. Swelling can also be a side effect of sitting for too long, pregnancy, certain medications, an underlying medical condition or an allergic reaction.

There are a number of simple things that you can do to help relieve swelling:

- Put your feet up. Sitting with your legs up on a foot stool can be a great remedy for reducing swelling. Make sure you elevate your legs higher than your heart for maximum benefit. You may also want to try a cushion or leg wedge placed under your legs at night to elevate your feet while you are sleeping.

- Stretch and flex your feet when you are sitting down. Try stretching your leg, heel first, and gently flexing your foot to stretch your calf muscles. Rotate your ankles and then wiggle your toes.

- Take regular breaks from sitting or standing. A short walk every so often can also help keep your blood from pooling in your lower extremities.

- Have a relaxing foot massage to soothe swollen feet and stimulate circulation. Use gentle but firm motions all over your feet. You may even want to consider a professional massage if your muscles are overworked or tired. Long massages can also boost your immune system.
