World Photography Day

To celebrate World Photography Day (Saturday 19th August 2023), we got in touch with our own in-house photographer, Will, to talk about his career - whilst also sharing his top photography tips for anyone that wants to get involved.

How long have you been a photographer?

I've been working as a photographer for Cosyfeet since around 2008.

What do you love most about your job?

I love being able to get creative in the studio and out on location. Seeing work printed in catalogues, across adverts in newspapers and online can be very satisfying!

What does a typical day working at Cosyfeet involve?

My typical day varies across the course of a season. Once the samples arrive for the coming season it's full steam ahead for planning and the completion of photoshoots, then I'll settle at my desk to begin the editing process. This involves ensuring our graphics department have all the assets they need in time for catalogues, online and any printed material.

What are you working on at the moment?

For the past weeks, I've been wrapping up all the imagery ready for the new autumn season. We shot most of the location imagery during a hot and sunny week in June; at a few lovely locations in Dorset. We're usually shooting out of season which means we'll do our summer photography in winter, and vice-versa, which brings problems of its own - imagine wearing waterproof boots and a winter coat on one of the hottest days of the year, or a summer dress and sandals on a cold morning in November! Thankfully we have some fantastic models who are very accommodating and are well practiced in working this way.

Do you have to be a professional to get involved with photography?

Not at all, photography is one of those pastimes accessible to everyone - I know an award winning photographer who solely uses their phone to create their work. High-level photographic equipment used by professionals can get incredibly expensive, but unless you're looking to get seriously involved in photography you really don't need to spend a fortune.

What are your top three photography tips for beginners?

  • Practice - pick up whatever camera you have and go and shoot. Practicing is by far the best way to improve your photography - try experimenting with settings to see what effects you can create.
  • Research - YouTube is a fantastic free resource for photographers of all levels. There are content creators out there who offer tips and advice on everything from new technology to photographic techniques.
  • Join photography groups - there will be local Camera Clubs you can attend in person, these can be great for making friends and socialising - if that's not for you then social media platforms like Facebook have an abundance of photography groups you can join and share your work.

We hope we’ve inspired you to get creative this World Photography Day!
