To celebrate Afternoon Tea Week (10th – 16th August), we’re giving you the chance to win a family cream tea hamper from Devon Hampers worth £46.25. Afternoon Tea Week was established to help secure a tradition that has graced British afternoons since the 1840’s. With dinner often not served until 8pm, this mini-meal was designed to see you through the rest of the day. Traditionally it contained tiny finger sandwiches, scones with jam and clotted cream, and sweet dainties like cakes and pastries.
Afternoon tea grew into a social event, especially for those who spent their lives in the upper echelons of the day’s society and became even more prominent once Queen Victoria herself took part in this tradition.
As the name suggests, tea was a central part of this meal, a tradition started by Anna, 7th Duchess of Bedford. She often found herself feeling tired in the middle of the day and found that a pot of tea was a great way to bolster her energy.
