Swollen feet/Oedema is fluid retention. It commonly occurs around the feet and ankles and can be caused or related to several different medical conditions. The excess fluid in the tissues causes swelling. This is most commonly related to poor venous return or the lymphatic system.
Causes of Oedema
- Heart failure
- Kidney disease
- Medications (Check with your GP)
- Lymphoedema
- Ordinary or ‘physiological’ causes of oedema. Oedema can occur in a fit and healthy person under certain conditions and will usually resolve without treatment. Such as the heat, immobility (i.e. during a flight), pregnancy and the menstrual cycle.
